Twilight Samurai

...is streaming on Watch Instant Netflix (thx Roger Ebert for the tweet).  Just about any Samurai movie is worth watching for the costumes and houses alone.  But this movie beautifully paints the Samurai in human shades: as a father, a son, a not always successful worker.  I loved watching this movie.  I won't post the trailer because they always show too much!  It won many awards in Japan.

Saw the Bill Cunningham documentary today.  SO good.  Pretty light in the ladies room.   I think I've taken this exact picture before.  But today was another day.

My petite French Lady

This is from the movie Gigi.  I watched it a few months ago and paused it to take her picture.  I loved her glasses, the beret, her whole demeanor.

Update...no, it wasn't :(.  Such a great bunch of actors.  But the script didn't convey enough humor and irony that Gilbert was able to write on the page.  Wish she had written the script.

I enjoyed seeing this preview the other night.  Roger Ebert reviewed it today.

This looks like it might be good:

Breaking Upwards, a little indie film where instead of breaking up, the young couple decides to take days off from each other.  A good description here.  Or maybe it will be annoying like this one?

update ...it WAS good.  Helped by the presence of two great actresses who played the "moms"!

So bad it's good:

A few weeks ago, Chris admitted to me that he'd watched Twilight in the wee hours of the night/morning while I had slept.  AND he had liked it! ...AND he thought I would too.  So we watched Twilight and then the sequel New Moon.  And he was right, I did.

Better the second time around

It was extra sweet to watch the DVD of Bright Star at home yesterday because when I saw it in the theater I had rushed to a matinee of it on opening day, only to realize that who attends matinees are mostly old (older than me) women and oh my gosh, they like to TALK through the whole film.  When shushed by some of us, they just whispered loudly!  It was so annoying to hear "oh isn't that beautiful" after every scenic shot, but ultimately comical when one of them said to the other: "I don't know how to tell you this, but he dies".   (Everyone knows Keats dies young, so I'm not spoiling it for you).  It was a bit like watching the movie AND an SNL skit with Kristen Wig at the same time.   So this second time I enjoyed every beautiful/tragic scene complete with costumes and harpsichords, ALONE.  It was marvelous hearing director Jane Campion talk about the unexpected field of blue flowers that appeared on the estate where they filmed and ended up as this scene below:
